  • USA Today offers a complete site for educational activities called the Lesson Library based on reading articles that were previously published in their newspaper and then completing a related activity.  While the activities are traditionally setup for the classroom setting, they can be easily adapted for home school or to be used as a home learning activity.  An example activity has students read a visual graph about students taking online course.  The child then has to create a graph based on the data, identify the dependent and independent variables, describe the rate of change, and make a prediction.  This activity stresses interpretation of a graph which is a skill many children have difficulty with mastering.  Spending extra time at home on this skill can help increase the achievement level of the child.  Extension activities include calculating percentages and comparing this data against other articles on online education and higher education.  Articles on topics including all major subject areas and topics are included in this Lesson Library.

  • Recently, I was asked why do I use Diigo for my social bookmarking tool. The more I thought about it the more I needed to write about all the great features Diigo is not just for regular ol’ users but has some great features for educators too.

  • While reading Nancy Bunge‘s “Why I No Longer Teach Online” from the Chronicle of Higher Education, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her because she was sold a bill of goods or not given the complete picture that could have led her and her students to a much more fruitful experience than the one that left her saying good-bye to online learning.

  • Google Docs is a fantastic tool for professional and student collaboration.  After using Google Docs for an extended period of time, it becomes evident to most Google Docs users that your inbox can become a cluttered, hectic and confusing mess.  Magnify that confusion X 100 when you start to have students share their documents with you for evaluation and grading and you can have a colossal mess on your hands.

  • There’s a long history of comics in the classroom, and the list of references at the end of this article is a great starting point for learning about this concept. While there’s still resistance to this medium being used in education – whether by staff or students – there is also a growing movement to use every valuable tool available. Comics have some great uses in the classroom and in a variety of curricula. From pre-readers to high school students, from English to ESL to Science and Math, comics can help students analyze, synthesize and absorb content that may be more difficult when presented in only one way.

  • The VEX Robotics Design System was developed and engineered with co-curricular and extracurricular robotics competitions specifically in mind. VEX equipment owners have a rapidly expanding selection of opportunities to experience the fun, motivation and excitement of competition. Some robotics competitions feature the VEX System exclusively while others have made select VEX components legal for participation. While the goals and resource requirements of these programs vary, they each leverage the affordability, reliability, flexibility and safety of the VEX System and components. Following are three programs developed exclusively for VEX equipment.

  • Schools are grappling with issues where students are capturing video, photos, and audio via cell phones and ipods at school and then posting these captures of other students and/or teachers to social networking sites such as YouTube, Flickr, Google Video, and Myspace while at home. Many of us are striving to update our acceptable use policies as they relate to social networking sites. Please help us edit and modify a working acceptable use policy for social networking that can be shared with other K12 educators.!

  • Webmath is a math-help web site that generates answers to specific math questions and problems, as entered by a user, at any particular moment. The math answers are generated and displayed real-time, at the moment a web user types in their math problem and clicks “solve.” In addition to the answers, Webmath also shows the student how to arrive at the answer.
